What is aphasia?

Aphasia is a language disorder that happens when parts of the brain responsible for language are damaged — most often by stroke, but also by traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, or progressive neurological conditions. It doesn't affect intelligence. The words are still there. The pathway to them just got interrupted.

Aphasia can affect any combination of language skills:

Every person's aphasia is different, and recovery is possible at every stage — even years after a stroke. Research has repeatedly shown that structured, meaningful speech therapy leads to real gains in language function long after the acute recovery window.

Signs aphasia therapy may help

Families reach out to us when they notice their loved one:

  • Struggles to find the right words in conversation, or says the wrong word
  • Has trouble following what people are saying, especially in groups
  • Can no longer read the newspaper, texts, or emails easily
  • Finds writing difficult, or writes in ways that don't quite make sense
  • Speaks in shorter sentences or single words instead of full thoughts
  • Feels frustrated, isolated, or withdrawn because communication is hard
  • Has plateaued in outpatient therapy but the family knows more progress is possible
  • Was discharged from insurance-funded therapy too soon

How we approach aphasia therapy

Aphasia therapy at Voice of Hope is evidence-based, personalized, and grounded in what matters most to you. Every plan starts with a thorough evaluation — not just of what language skills are impaired, but of what activities, conversations, and relationships you most want to reconnect with.

Depending on the type and severity of aphasia, we may use approaches like Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA), Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST), Melodic Intonation Therapy, script training for everyday conversations, or constraint-induced language therapy. We combine these with functional practice — the real words, phrases, and situations that will actually improve your daily life.

Family and caregivers are welcome — and often essential — in the therapy process. We coach loved ones in supported conversation techniques that make communication easier at home, at gatherings, and in the community.

Questions people ask us

How soon after a stroke should aphasia therapy start?

As soon as it's medically appropriate. Early intensive therapy during the acute recovery window (first 3–6 months) offers strong gains, but meaningful progress is possible at every stage — including years after the stroke. It's never too late to work on communication.

My family member has been in therapy for a long time and hit a plateau. Can more therapy still help?

Yes, often significantly. Plateaus are frequently a sign of ending therapy too soon, or that a different approach might unlock new gains. A fresh evaluation with new goals and evidence-based techniques can restart progress. We see this regularly.

Do you accept insurance or Medicare?

We are currently in the process of contracting with Medicare and major insurance plans. Please call us to check current status. In the meantime we offer cash-pay options and provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Can family members be part of therapy?

Absolutely — and we strongly encourage it. Family members and caregivers are the most important communication partners in a person's life. We coach loved ones in techniques that make everyday conversations easier and more successful.

How long will therapy take?

It varies widely based on the type and severity of aphasia, time since onset, and individual goals. Some clients work with us for a few months focused on specific goals; others benefit from longer-term ongoing therapy. We'll give you an honest sense of timeline after evaluation.
