What is voice therapy?

Voice therapy is specialized speech pathology focused on the voice itself — how it sounds, how it feels, how it functions, and how well it serves your life. Your voice is deeply personal, and voice disorders affect how you connect with others, how you're perceived, and often how you feel about yourself.

We work with a range of voice concerns, including:

For most voice concerns, we recommend seeing an ear-nose-throat (ENT) doctor first for a laryngeal exam, especially if hoarseness has lasted more than a few weeks. Voice therapy works hand-in-hand with medical evaluation.

Signs voice therapy may help

Consider a voice evaluation if you:

  • Have been hoarse for more than 2–3 weeks
  • Feel vocal fatigue or discomfort by the end of the day
  • Have been told you have vocal nodules, polyps, or muscle tension
  • Use your voice heavily for work (teacher, performer, coach, clergy)
  • Have difficulty being heard, or feel like you have to push to speak
  • Are seeking gender-affirming voice care
  • Notice pitch, quality, or volume that doesn't match how you want to sound
  • Have breathing symptoms tied to vocal effort

How we approach voice therapy

Voice therapy is highly individualized. Every plan starts with a comprehensive voice evaluation — reviewing your medical history, listening carefully, assessing vocal function, and understanding what you want your voice to do. Where appropriate, we coordinate with your ENT for a full picture of vocal fold health.

Depending on your goals, therapy may include evidence-based approaches like Vocal Function Exercises, Resonant Voice Therapy, Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract exercises, Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy, or specialized programs for gender-affirming voice care. We combine skill work with practical carryover into your daily voice use.

Your voice is uniquely yours. Our job is to help it work the way you need it to — comfortably, effectively, and authentically.

Questions people ask us

Do I need to see an ENT before voice therapy?

For most voice concerns — especially hoarseness lasting more than 2–3 weeks — yes. An ENT laryngeal exam ensures we know exactly what's happening with your vocal folds and rules out anything that needs medical treatment first. We can help you find one if you don't have one.

Can voice therapy really change how I sound?

Yes — significantly, in many cases. Voice therapy has strong evidence for improving voice quality, endurance, and function, and for supporting gender-affirming voice change. Results depend on the specific concern, consistency of practice, and goals.

Do you offer gender-affirming voice therapy?

Yes. We provide affirming, evidence-based voice work for people seeking to modify pitch, resonance, intonation, and other features of voice to better match their gender identity — for voice feminization, masculinization, or gender-neutral voice.
