What is myofunctional therapy?

Orofacial myofunctional therapy is a specialized program that retrains the muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and face. When these muscles rest, move, or function incorrectly, it can affect how a person speaks, swallows, breathes, and even how their teeth and jaw develop.

Think of it as physical therapy for the mouth and face. Through targeted exercises and habit retraining, we help establish correct patterns — proper tongue resting posture, nasal breathing, a mature swallow, and the elimination of habits that get in the way.

We work with a wide range of myofunctional concerns, including:

Because these patterns affect so many systems — speech, dental alignment, breathing, feeding — myofunctional therapy often works best alongside your dentist, orthodontist, or ENT.

Signs myofunctional therapy may help

Children, teens, and adults come to us — often referred by a dentist or orthodontist — when they notice:

  • Tongue pushes against or between the teeth when swallowing or at rest (tongue thrust)
  • Habitual mouth breathing or an open-mouth resting posture
  • A tongue-tie, or a recent or upcoming frenectomy (release)
  • Thumb-sucking, prolonged pacifier use, or nail-biting habits
  • Difficulty with certain speech sounds tied to tongue placement (like /s/, /z/, /r/, /l/)
  • Orthodontic relapse — teeth shifting back after braces
  • Referred by a dentist, orthodontist, or ENT for oral muscle retraining
  • Chewing, swallowing, or food-management difficulties linked to oral posture

Our approach to myofunctional therapy

Every program begins with a thorough evaluation of tongue posture, resting position, swallowing pattern, breathing, and oral habits. From there we build a personalized program of exercises that retrain these muscles step by step — playful and engaging for children, focused and goal-driven for teens and adults.

The real work happens between sessions. Myofunctional therapy relies on short, consistent daily home exercises that build new muscle memory. We make the exercises clear and doable, and we coach families so home practice actually happens — because that's what makes the change stick.

And because these patterns are so connected to dental and airway health, we coordinate closely with your dentist, orthodontist, or ENT throughout — so everyone's working toward the same goal.

🦷 We work with your dental & medical team

Myofunctional therapy is most effective as part of a team. We regularly accept referrals from and coordinate with dentists, orthodontists, and ENTs — because retraining the underlying muscle patterns helps orthodontic and airway treatment succeed and last. Referrals always welcome.

What to expect

1

Evaluation

A thorough assessment of tongue posture, resting position, swallowing pattern, oral habits, and breathing. We'll identify exactly which patterns to target.

2

Personalized plan

A program of exercises tailored to your (or your child's) specific myofunctional pattern and goals — coordinated with your dentist or orthodontist when relevant.

3

Weekly therapy

30-minute sessions building correct muscle movement step by step, plus short daily home exercises that make the new patterns automatic.

4

Questions people ask us

What is orofacial myofunctional therapy?

It's a specialized program of exercises and techniques that retrain the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue. The goal is to correct improper tongue posture, swallowing patterns, and oral habits that can affect speech, dental alignment, breathing, and facial development. Think of it as physical therapy for the muscles of the mouth and face.

What is a tongue thrust, and why does it matter?

A tongue thrust is when the tongue pushes forward against or between the teeth during swallowing, speaking, or at rest. Over time this can contribute to dental problems, undo orthodontic work, and affect certain speech sounds. Myofunctional therapy retrains the tongue to rest and swallow correctly.

Do you work with tongue-tie (before or after a frenectomy)?

Yes. Myofunctional therapy is often recommended both before and after a tongue-tie release (frenectomy). Pre-release therapy prepares and strengthens the muscles; post-release therapy helps establish new, correct movement patterns so the release achieves its full benefit. We coordinate closely with your dentist, ENT, or release provider.

Can myofunctional therapy help with mouth breathing?

It can be an important part of the picture. Chronic mouth breathing and an open-mouth resting posture are common myofunctional concerns. We work on nasal breathing habits and proper lip and tongue resting posture — often alongside an ENT or dentist who addresses any airway or structural causes.

Do you work with dentists and orthodontists?

Yes, closely. Myofunctional therapy works best as part of a team. We regularly collaborate with dentists, orthodontists, and ENTs — because correcting the underlying muscle patterns helps orthodontic treatment succeed and last. If your dentist or orthodontist referred you, we'll coordinate care with them directly.

What ages do you treat?

All ages. Myofunctional concerns show up in young children, teens, and adults. Therapy is tailored to each stage of life — playful and engaging for children, goal-focused for teens and adults. It's never too late to correct these patterns.

How long does myofunctional therapy take?

Most programs run several months, with weekly sessions plus short daily home exercises. Consistency with the home practice is the single biggest factor in success — the exercises retrain muscle memory, which takes repetition. We'll give you a clearer timeline after your evaluation.
