Pediatric articulation and phonological therapy in Huntington Beach — helping your child be understood by family, teachers, and friends.
A speech sound disorder is when a child has trouble producing specific sounds correctly, or when they use patterns of sound errors that make their speech difficult to understand. It's one of the most common reasons families reach out to a speech-language pathologist — and one of the most treatable.
There are two main types we work with at Voice of Hope:
Some sound errors are developmentally normal at certain ages, and some aren't. That's where an evaluation helps — we can tell you whether what you're hearing is expected for your child's age or worth addressing now, before it affects reading, school, or self-esteem.
Parents in Huntington Beach reach out to us when they notice things like:
Our approach is evidence-based, play-based, and built entirely around your child. Every session is designed to feel like play — because for young children, play is the therapy.
For younger kids, we often use motor-learning approaches that target multiple sounds at once, so progress carries over into everyday speech faster. For older kids working on specific sounds, we use traditional articulation therapy with lots of feedback, mirror work, and real-life practice.
What sets us apart is how much we involve you. You'll leave every session knowing what to practice at home, in the car, at bathtime — so therapy isn't just something that happens in the clinic. That's how kids make lasting progress.
A 60–90 minute session where we assess your child's sound system in a warm, play-based way. You'll leave with a clear picture of what's going on and what to do next.
We build a treatment plan targeting the sounds most likely to make the biggest difference in your child's overall clarity — not a one-size-fits-all program.
45-minute sessions, usually once or twice a week, focused on progress you can actually hear at home.
Every 8–12 weeks we review goals together, celebrate wins, and adjust the plan as your child grows.
Many children benefit from support in more than one area. Learn about our other pediatric specialties:
It depends on the sound. Most children should be understood by strangers about 75% of the time by age 3 and nearly 100% of the time by age 4. Sounds like /r/, /l/, /s/, and /th/ can develop later — sometimes not until age 6 or 7. If you're unsure, an evaluation gives you a clear answer instead of a guess.
That advice made more sense a decade ago, before research showed how much early intervention improves outcomes. If you're concerned, an evaluation costs you very little and can save your child months or years of struggle. We'd rather tell you "they're right on track" than have you wait when they weren't.
Articulation is about how a specific sound is physically produced — the tongue, lips, and airflow. Phonology is about the patterns your child uses across sounds — like leaving off the ends of words, or replacing all "k" and "g" sounds with "t" and "d." Treatment looks different for each, which is why a proper evaluation matters.
Every child is different, but families usually see noticeable progress within 3–6 months of consistent weekly therapy. Simpler articulation issues may resolve in a few months; complex phonological patterns can take longer. We'll give you an honest timeline after evaluation.
We're a cash-pay clinic, which means no insurance authorization delays and faster access to care. We provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement, and many families are surprised how much they recoup. See our fees page for details.
