What is dysphagia?

Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing. It can affect any stage of eating and drinking — from moving food around the mouth, to safely swallowing without food going down the wrong way, to comfortable passage into the stomach. Left unaddressed, dysphagia can lead to poor nutrition, dehydration, weight loss, aspiration pneumonia, and reduced quality of life.

Common causes of adult dysphagia include:

The good news: many types of dysphagia respond very well to targeted therapy — building muscle strength, improving coordination, teaching safe strategies, and preserving the pleasure of eating.

Signs dysphagia therapy may help

Consider a swallowing evaluation when you notice:

  • Coughing or throat-clearing during or after meals
  • Food feeling stuck in the throat
  • Wet or gurgly voice after eating or drinking
  • Taking a very long time to finish meals
  • Avoiding certain foods or textures that used to be easy
  • Weight loss or dehydration without a clear cause
  • Recurrent pneumonia — often a sign of aspiration
  • A diagnosis or hospitalization involving swallowing concerns

How we approach dysphagia therapy

Every plan begins with a comprehensive clinical swallowing evaluation. Depending on findings, we may recommend or coordinate with an instrumental assessment (like a Modified Barium Swallow Study or FEES) through a hospital or imaging center to get a full picture of what's happening during the swallow.

Treatment approaches include muscle-strengthening exercises (like Effortful Swallow, Mendelsohn Maneuver, or Shaker Exercise), postural strategies, sensory techniques, and — when appropriate — evidence-based programs like McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program or Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST). We also work closely with your physician and other providers to make sure your therapy fits the bigger picture.

Eating is one of life's great pleasures. Our goal is to make it safe, comfortable, and — as much as possible — enjoyable again.
